yeah, i know what you mean... artist block really does sucks.
this is actually the second portrait i've done in 6 years. i used to hardly draw portraits because drawing people used to intimidate me (actually, i've only done 2 portraits before these 2 alex evans ones here on deviantart). but now i'm like trying to get better at drawing people by doing more portraits, you know?
well, i hope you get over your artist block soon so i can see more of your work!!!!!

what i do is shade lightly with my pencil, and then run my finger over it to like smear it. but when you smear it, you want to run your finger over it in the same direction as you would if you are actually touching the real thing (for example, if you are shading his cheek, you would shade it with your finger as if there is an actual curve there). that way, the direction of the shading mimics how like the skin hangs on the face in real life.
the natural oil on the tips of your fingers makes the shading darker.
